"Femur surgery at Geraldton Regional"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Day Surgery Geraldton Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I broke my femur a couple of weeks ago and was treated at Geraldton Regional Hospital. The treatment that I received was fantastic and the nurses, even though they were so busy, were amazing towards me.

The only thing that I wasn’t happy about, was the fact that I had to wait 48 hours with a broken leg before I could have surgery (I came in at lunch time on a Saturday and a surgeon wasn’t available until the Monday). My leg was held in an apparatus that should only be used for 12 hours, not 48, which wasn’t overly pleasant.

However, the actual treatment I received was amazing. A special mention to Penny, Anna, Charlotte and Kayla on Day Surgery Ward. They were so friendly and warm, and made me feel like nothing was a problem when I needed something.

Dr. Lorcan did a great job on my leg. So far it’s healing well and the scar is really neat.

Dear Broken femur,

My name is Derek Fraser and I am the Operations Manager at Geraldton Hospital. Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion, I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience of Geraldton Hospital. Stories like yours are essential in ensuring we remain focused on patient centred care.

I will take great pleasure in thanking Penny, Anna, Charlotte and Kayla on Day Surgery Ward for their warmth and compassion. Their dedication to your care is a credit to them all. I was also heartened to read of the skills displayed by Dr Lorcan in repairing your femur and keeping scarring to a minimum. We are exceptionally lucky to be able to call on his services in the Midwest.

I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you regarding the delay in surgery and remaining in the leg support for longer than would be ideal. If you are happy to, please feel free to call me on 9956 2369 or via email at derek.fraser@health.wa.gov.au. Any call or email will be very welcome.

I would like to take this opportunity to let you know that we have a process in place for patients and their families and carers to escalate any concerns they might have about the healthcare they are receiving. The Call and Response Early (CARE) call process enables people to request urgent assistance when they are concerned about their health and feel that their healthcare team has not fully recognised their changing health condition. When a CARE Call is made, a senior staff member listens to the concerns of the person making the CARE Call and makes a full assessment of the patient’s situation. The senior staff member then liaises with the treating medical team and other health care providers as required. The CARE call phone number is 1800 316 729 and all calls are very welcome. If you would like further information about CARE Call, please visit the WACHS Website at: WA Country Health Service - CARE Call.

Best regards

Derek Fraser
