"Medication overdose"

About: Broome Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I was in Broome Hospital several months ago after an accident where I broke my back. I recall I was given morphine for the pain while in ED, and was somehow overdosed - given 100mg instead of 13mg. I spent the night in the High Dependency Unit on oxygen, and was in and out of consciousness for the next 24 hours or so.

At the time, I believe the staff disclosed to myself and my family that the incident happened and that an investigation would be launched. I’ve contacted the Hospital since, however I have still not received any communication on the outcome of the investigation, nor how this error occurred.

I still get symptoms which I believe could be related to this incident, and would not want to see anyone else overdosed, so would appreciate some communication from the Hospital around what has been done to fix this.

Hi name1234,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Care Opinion.

It must have been such a traumatic experience having an accident and breaking your back. I do hope that with time you make a complete recovery.

I understand that a clinical investigation was undertaken into the events of your suspected medication overdose and I am very sorry to hear that your attempts to learn about the investigation outcomes have not been successful.

I would be very happy to speak with you about the investigation outcomes, so if you are happy to please contact me on 0408 913 638 or email me at Broome.Directorofnursing@health.wa.gov.au

I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely

Millie Stewart
