So I was in Midland SJOG hospital receiving care due to a motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival, I was placed on a bed in a corridor for around three hours with seemingly no neck brace or support for my neck injury. I believe I was left in the corridor on the bed to lay flat for three hours before being seen to.
Whilst I was waiting in the corridor there was a patient who was brought in by paramedics due to a failed suicide attempt. How I know this, was it was spoken about quite loudly in front of myself and I recall several other patients waiting in the corridor. I think this patient suffered from psychosis and was escorted in by perhaps several security guards police officers and paramedics and was placed in a room across from me.
The patient was quite aggressive and it appeared to me they couldn’t be calmed down. I believe that after some time they were either removed from the room or they were given a calmative. I could not physically lift my head to look to see where the patient had gone. A nurse entered the room and began speaking with the paramedics. I remember the nurse had asked one of the paramedics what the situation was and the paramedic had replied something along the lines of oh, just another failed suicide attempt, what a loser if you’re going to do the job do it properly, they are now just going to be another problem in a wheelchair for someone else to deal with. I recall the nurse and I believe several other paramedics around did not really respond however they did laugh. The conversation seemed to have come to a cease after this.
I recall not once was my mental health checked and neither were my obs within the three hours while I waited. Upon entering the ED to see a doctor, I felt I was still not checked on appropriately.
Finally, after some time I was seen to and I was bought into the ED rooms and out of the corridor. I was given Tapentadol which is an opioid analgesic for pain relief for the pressure in my head as well as Stamatil, as I had received a head injury. This medication made me feel very drowsy and very blurry to what was already a situation of dizziness and I struggled to stay awake.
I recall my obs were not run until well after I was given this medication and my obs were checked over almost two hours later. I had fallen asleep waiting to find out what was wrong with me, only to be woken by a doctor and sent home with vertigo and then as I understand it, told to drive home. Despite the effects of my injury and the medications side effects. In my opinion, this was incredibly dangerous.
