"Poor behaviour and compassion"

About: St John of God Midland Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

So I was in Midland SJOG hospital receiving care due to a motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival, I was placed on a bed in a corridor for around three hours with seemingly no neck brace or support for my neck injury. I believe I was left in the corridor on the bed to lay flat for three hours before being seen to.

Whilst I was waiting in the corridor there was a patient who was brought in by paramedics due to a failed suicide attempt. How I know this, was it was spoken about quite loudly in front of myself and I recall several other patients waiting in the corridor. I think this patient suffered from psychosis and was escorted in by perhaps several security guards police officers and paramedics and was placed in a room across from me.

The patient was quite aggressive and it appeared to me they couldn’t be calmed down. I believe that after some time they were either removed from the room or they were given a calmative. I could not physically lift my head to look to see where the patient had gone. A nurse entered the room and began speaking with the paramedics. I remember the nurse had asked one of the paramedics what the situation was and the paramedic had replied something along the lines of oh, just another failed suicide attempt, what a loser if you’re going to do the job do it properly, they are now just going to be another problem in a wheelchair for someone else to deal with. I recall the nurse and I believe several other paramedics around did not really respond however they did laugh. The conversation seemed to have come to a cease after this.

I recall not once was my mental health checked and neither were my obs within the three hours while I waited. Upon entering the ED to see a doctor, I felt I was still not checked on appropriately.

Finally, after some time I was seen to and I was bought into the ED rooms and out of the corridor. I was given Tapentadol which is an opioid analgesic for pain relief for the pressure in my head as well as Stamatil, as I had received a head injury. This medication made me feel very drowsy and very blurry to what was already a situation of dizziness and I struggled to stay awake.

I recall my obs were not run until well after I was given this medication and my obs were checked over almost two hours later. I had fallen asleep waiting to find out what was wrong with me, only to be woken by a doctor and sent home with vertigo and then as I understand it, told to drive home. Despite the effects of my injury and the medications side effects. In my opinion, this was incredibly dangerous.

Dear Unhappy0000,

Thank you for your Care Opinion Post in which you raise some concerning issues related to your recent experience in our Emergency Department (ED).

I was extremely disappointed to learn that you did not receive the highest standard of person-centred care that we strive to provide for all our patients. The expectation is that our caregivers will respond to all patients with compassion and respect at all times. Regrettably, the busy and noisy environment of the ED is not ideal for patients presenting with mental health issues, however, it is vital that they feel cared for and their privacy respected. I am sorry you overheard inappropriate remarks by caregivers and please be assured this incident will be thoroughly investigated by our ED Nurse Manager.

As you have raised other significant issues, I would appreciate the opportunity to get further details so we can investigate and implement changes where needed.

I would appreciate it if you could contact our Patient Experience team on 9462 4901 and provide some further information.

Please be assured that we will fully investigate your concerns and thank you once again for bringing this to our attention.

Kind regards,

Janet Jones
