"Lack of appropriate care"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My teenage child, who is legally an adult and lives alone, presented to GRH recently one night after self-harming by cutting their arms and legs - once again. This is about the 4th time in the last 12months that they have presented with this issue. That night my child told me that they admitted to the doctor that they saw that they had been using Xanax and that they smoke a particular drug.

My child was seen, given tubigrip for the areas they cut and sent home to be alone. They said they asked for mental health to see them but was just told to go home.

I am very concerned as this is an ongoing issue which I have complained about before, as has my child's grandparent, and as you would know once the episode is over often the cry for help also disappears until next time. Don't the doctors read patient notes - or do they not have access to them during the night, as if they did, I believe they would see this is an ongoing issue and needs to be addressed further.

My child was being seen by mental health about 6 months ago, that seemed to stop, not even a phone call I believe to see how they are going. In my opinion, mental health and drug services in the Midwest are an absolute disgrace with the lack of care and follow up. I feel that sometimes all you need is a phone call.

Dear earmarkpp87,

Please accept my sincere apologies that the mental health team were not contacted to offer support when your adult child presented to the Geraldton Hospital Emergency Department (ED). This must have been very distressing for your child and I am very sorry this happened.

We do not want any of our patients and their families and carers walking away feeling they have not received the care they needed from our ED. Community Mental Health services operate during business hours from Monday to Friday. Patients seeking help from the ED are supported through a Mental Health Liaison service which operates through to 9:30 pm weekdays and works in conjunction with the Mental Health Emergency Telehealth Service. This service provides access to Mental Health Professionals via Video Conferencing and is available 24/7.

If your child needs mental health support again, I would like to let you know that the Midwest Mental Health Service and Community Drug and Alcohol Service is available for people to self-refer. If you click on this link: WA Country Health Service - Midwest Mental Health and Community Alcohol and Drug Service you can find out more information that might be useful.

I would also like to share with you a process we have at the hospital called Aishwarya’s CARE Call. You may notice in our ED, posters about Aishwarya’s CARE Call, which is a 1800 number for patients, carers and families to raise their concerns if they or someone they care for is getting sicker. In the Midwest, no matter what hospital you go to this number is 1800 316 729 or you can find out more here at: WA Country Health Service - Aishwarya’s CARE Call.

I truly hope your child has accessed the services they require. However, I would really like the opportunity to meet with you and your child to discuss your concerns and provide any support that your child may need. If this is something you would like, you can contact me on 9956 8676 or email me at Neil.Dadd@health.wa.gov.au.

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion. I hope to hear from you soon so we can work together to support you and your family.

Yours sincerely

Neil Dadd
