"The way I was treated"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Antenatal Clinic, Birth Suite, Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit, Wards 3B, 3C, 3D, 3DO, Visiting Midwife Service

(as the patient),

So I was concerned about my baby’s reduced movements and I read the patient book given by the hospital where they have clearly stated to call the Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit if in doubt. I did so and was told to come and see the staff. I went there and they checked baby’s heartbeat. While I was lying on the bed and waiting for the result, a clincian came to me and said everything was okay. They asked me how I was feeling about the movements. Are they normal or do I still want to see the doctor (who I recall they said was busy at that time) for my piece of mind?

Being a first time mum, I honestly had no idea what to do. I asked the clinician what they reckon. The clinician seemed angry and asked me once again that they wanted to hear it from me whether the movements were okay or I still wanted to see the doctor. I then made my mind and said, I better see the doctor. I recall the clinician slammed the door and went out.

I felt like I have made a mistake by coming in here and cried all alone in the room.

And I came home without seeing the doctor as I was feeling absolutely s*** lying there.

Dear WarriorMom,

Thank you for contacting us.

Firstly, please be assured that you absolutely did the right thing by attending Fiona Stanley Hospital with your concerns. You did not make a mistake and I am very sorry you felt that way.

I was extremely disappointed to read of the way you were spoken to, and have discussed this with our Coordinator of Nursing and Midwifery, Peta Fisher. Peta shares my view that your treatment is in no way reflective of our values, and Peta would very much like to speak to you about your experience. Ideally we will be able to use this as a learning opportunity, to educate our staff on what is expected of them in terms of communication, compassion and kindness.

Peta is awaiting your call – please phone switch on 6152 2222 and ask to be put through to her.

We look forward to hearing from you soon. And again, I would like to sincerely apologise for your experience.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
