"Post op care- pain management"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Surgical Ward

(as a carer),

My spouse had surgery recently. I recall the surgeon & anaesthetist advised them to keep up pain management overnight, don’t wait otherwise it will take longer to catch. Doctor came in that afternoon and advised the same.

Overnight, my spouse requested medication as anaesthetic wore off around midnight. I recall there were delays issuing medication and then when asked for other meds that the anaesthetist had charted if they needed, I recall the nurse said it would just mean more paperwork and more work for them. Additional meds not administered.

Pain Management team came in the following day reiterating the importance of keeping pain under control. I recall this wasn’t maintained and there were delays issuing pain meds again, pain still not under control, further delays again and not charted in file at actual time administered but has written the due time, which I believe was around 45mins earlier, so doesn’t show the delays or explain why pain is still present.

My spouse was discharged later with pain not under control.
