"Waiting a long period of time"

About: Peel Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a friend),

My children's parent had cut their finger quite badly on some metal at home one evening recently (squirting blood cut really deep) the bleeding had not stopped even with pressure on it.

We are not a family whom utilises the hospital as we are great at maintaining things at home, although this cut had to be seen by a doctor. When they presented at Peel Health Campus emergency department at around mid-afternoon a few days ago, they glanced around to what they had seen was around about 20+ people in ED awaiting area waiting to be seen also. They checked in with triage & insisted to sit down and await to be seen from a doctor. During this time they had not been offered a drink nor pain relief, I believe they were advised by triage it would take a few hours before they would be seen by a doctor.

Unfortunately based on this experience, this is not a hospital I'd recommend my family nor friends to present at if ever in emergency. Long wait times can cause distress and if awaiting hours just to see a doctor at Peel Health Campus, I would be recommending my family and friends to travel to another hospital. Regardless of what's going on in the work place - I believe it's always nice to be reassured and cared for appropriately. In my opinion, that isn't something Peel Health Campus had achieved that day. My partner sat in the waiting room at emergency in pain almost dehydrated for 4+ hours and at the time of writing this, was still awaiting to be seen.

Dear controllersb38,

Thank you for your feedback regarding your children's parent's recent presentation to the Emergency Department at Peel Health Campus.

I am sorry that your children's parent had to wait some time before being seen by a doctor and was not offered any pain relief. I would like to reassure you that all patients are triaged in line with the Australasian Triage Standard and are categorised according to their presenting condition. We have noted an increase in the number of patients presenting to the ED, likely due to the COVID pandemic and unfortunately, this can lead to longer than normal wait times, which you have stated that the triage nurse explained at the time. We are continually reviewing our processes to maintain patient flow but unfortunately, this can sometimes be out of our control.

We do take all feedback seriously and are sorry that you felt the care provided did not meet your expectation on this occasion.

I trust your children’s parent is recovering well from the injury.

Regards,

Andrew Tome

Chief Executive Officer
