I had a mastectomy and breast reconstruction in Perth. About a month later, I was feeling really very unwell, very tired, low grade temperature, nausea, my operated breast was quite swollen and red. I presented to the ED department and was seen by a staff member who gave me oral antibiotics and I was sent home. Before leaving I insisted on seeing a clinician. I was seen and a script for a blood test to be done the next day was given to me. The clinician also told me I was worrying for nothing, the low-grade temperature was nothing to worry about and it seemed was suggesting it was all in my head! I think that is what upset me the most.
Anyway, on arriving home, my adult child was able to contact my surgeon in Perth and sent them a photo of my breast. I was told to go to Perth the following day. On arrival in Perth, I was admitted a different hospital and put on IV Antibiotics and 250mls of turbid fluid was drained from my breast under ultrasound and I was booked for surgery. The wound broke down before that, on the morning of my surgery, with even more pus draining out. I was in hospital for the rest of the week .
I feel very upset with the way I was treated at Manjimup. The clinician made me feel like I shouldn’t have even been there, when I was feeling very sick with a big infection after a mastectomy, the lack of compassion was difficult to accept.
