"Ongoing testicular pain"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Surgical Ward

(as the patient),

I had ongoing pain for years, I saw a specialist in Kalgoorlie, my appointment went for about 3 minutes. The clinician said lay on the bed, I did, they felt around, got told I had a small epididymitis I believe and sent me home. This was a year and a bit ago

This pain has got nothing but worse. Since then, I had surgery in Kalgoorlie Hospital around late last year and since that day it’s gotten nothing but worse and worse. I’ve now lost my dream job because I can’t work, I can’t have fun or play any sports, I can hardly walk at this point, there is something wrong with me and it seems no one is bothered to look why.

I was admitted to Kalgoorlie Hospital recently for scans in the morning and to be watched overnight, the pain only got worse. I felt the staff didn’t do anything about it, continuously giving me painkillers that I said weren’t working and I didn’t like taking them as is it made me feel anxious. The next morning the surgery team came in, had a look at my testicles for about 30 seconds, said they aren’t red and they will give me anti-inflammatorys and I can go home. This is the third time since my surgery I’ve been sent home on different anti-inflammatorys, I get them from my GP as well and nothing is helping.

I’m at a point where I don’t currently have health insurance and looking into it it’s going to take 12 months for pre-existing things to be able to use their service. I can’t wait that long, I live in the outback where Perth is the only place I can go, I can’t afford health insurance because I can’t work and it seems I need health insurance to get better. My life is crumbling before my eyes, I’m losing my happiness and everything feels like it’s falling apart. I need help and I feel no staff here cares.

Dear castornc94,

Thank you for sharing your experience attending the Kalgoorlie Health Campus (KHC) for Outpatients Specialist appointments and the Surgical Ward and bringing your concerns to my attention. I can only imagine how frustrating it has been for you being in pain and not being able to work or participate in your usual activities.

We strive to provide care to our patients that is person-centred and supports our patients and I am disappointed to read that you feel as though the treating clinicians do not care about your medical issue and that you have not received the level of care that is expected. We want all of our patients and their families and carers to feel safe, heard and supported while they are in our care and I’m so sorry this was not your experience.

As Care Opinion is an anonymous platform for our consumers to share their experiences, we do not have the information required to review your care at this time. If you feel comfortable to do so, I encourage you to contact Dr Sankha Mitra, Goldfields Regional Director of Medical Services on 0417 992 147 or via email Sankha.Mitra@health.wa.gov.au. Sankha will be able to facilitate a full review of your care and discuss any of the issues you have raised further as well as any other kind of support we may be able to offer you. Sankha will be more than happy to talk with you and would welcome your call.

I would also like to let you know about an escalation process we have in place at the Kalgoorlie Health Campus (KHC) that supports patients and their families and carers to call for assistance if they feel that their or their loved one’s healthcare concerns are not being addressed. This process is called Aishwarya’s CARE Call and it enables you to speak to a senior member of staff who will listen to your concerns and help you or your loved one. Information about Aishwarya’s CARE Call is now in place throughout the waiting room areas in the KHC so that people are aware of the process. If you are concerned about the care you receive in hospital in the future, I encourage you to make a CARE Call on (08) 9080 5781.

I truly thank you for you feedback, for this give us information to help us to continually improve our patient experience and improve our clinicians practice overall.

Kind regards

Peter Tredinnick
