"Covid booster denied"

About: Karratha Health Campus / COVID Vaccination Clinic Karratha

(as a service user),

I had covid and after my isolation period I called Karratha vacc clinic at the hospital to make sure when I should get my booster, as I had only 2 vaccines and I was due for my third. The staff member on the phone said I could have my booster done straight after my isolation period if no symptoms. I booked an appointment, went to the hospital and was turned away because I had just had covid and couldn’t have the vacc. I told them someone on the phone said no problem and they said it must have been a miscommunication. I rang again around a week after to confirm this and they said it is your choice to have it now or in 3 months.

So I booked again, went there and they said I can’t have it before three months after having covid. I am still very annoyed for the waste of time. I feel I should go back without answering the question if I’ve had covid. If it is a miscommunication, I think is pretty serious as I trust I am protected and I don’t want to get the vaccine, but it is mandatory to have it… I believe this would be solved with better information for the staff as I recall WA Health website, the official info source, says you can choose if you want to have your booster after having covid or wait for three months.

Hi grusdx99,

Firstly, I would like to kindly apologise for the miscommunitcation and the run around you have endured, that should never have occurred. I can only imagine how frustrating this must have been, when trying to do the right thing and access your booster vaccine dose.

I would like to understand further where the breakdown in communication occurred to ensure this does not happen again.

My name is Alistair and I am the Regional COVID-19 Vaccination Lead for WACHS Pilbara. You can reach me on Alistair.Pinto@health.wa.gov.au.

Regards,
Alistair

Dr. Alistair Pinto

Hello again grusdx99,

Thank you for emailing me and getting in touch so that we could have a chat about your experience.

As discussed, I have already liaised with the Operations Manager at Karratha Health Campus and my Nurse Managers this morning and we will ensure staff both at hospital concierge and within the vaccination clinics have access to the most up to date information on vaccination guidelines for anyone who has previously had COVID-19 and/or who is coming out of self-isolation and wanting access to vaccination.

I understand that you have since obtained your booster COVID-19 vaccination at the Pharmacy. Thank you for your feedback which will help improve our services across the region and for Rolling up for WA.

Regards,
Alistair
