As I understand it, sometimes my elderly parent is not checked on in the night or feels intimidated or on occasions bullied by some evening and night staff to take the pills or to go to bed early so, I believe, they can sign off and go home. It seems there is no power to speak up or yell out for help if the buzzer is out of reach and in my parent's experience, left humiliated for bed wetting.
My parent is not able to get in and out of bed and is totally reliant on staff and doesn't have dementia therefore knows exactly what they're doing. In reporting these incidents, my parent feels vulnerable to retaliation, or is hurting their feelings by complaining or being a nuisance for pressing the buzzer too often.
There are however some brilliant staff but perhaps the management might be a bit out of the loop situated in an office so far from front line duties. I'm unsure they truly know what goes on down there in the facility and what basic jobs are, in my opinion, being skimmed over or skipped. Especially night shifts.
Some staff have indicated privately in confidence that they are frustrated and angry as they feel not all staff do their job properly to acceptable standards and, as I recall, some staff can apparently be very lazy or don't use common sense or have empathy. I don't believe action is taken or some staff choose not to get involved and I think it definitely shows.
