"Care after hernia repair operation"

About: Swan Hill District Hospital / Theatre / Day Procedure Unit

(as the patient),

I had a hernia repair operation at SHDH.

At the pre op appointment the week before, the pre admission nurse told me that a physio would see me prior to leaving hospital, to advise me about when and what type of exercises that I could do after I came home.

I was quite happy with the care I received while in hospital, and the nurse on duty was very good and explained and wrote down the medication that I was required to take on my return home.

But when I was told that I was going home the morning after the op, I said to the nursing staff that I thought that I had to see the physio before I left, and was told that I didn't need to see anyone and was promptly sent home.

So I came home and was unaware of how much I was allowed to do, and how to do things like getting in and out of bed and chairs.

The only way I could find out a little was to go on the internet. It was very vague and not very helpful.

It is too late to help me but based on my experience, I would advise that the staff or whoever is responsible, to follow up on the advice given to patients at their pre op appointment.

Dear octanscy66,

I am sorry for your experience, and that your discharge was not as you were expecting, and that you didn't get to see the physio before you went home, and so didn't have clarity on what you could do, or at what stage you could start to do more.

Certainly this is disappointing as everyone likes to be well informed about their health and what to expect on their recovery.

I have asked the lead physiotherapist and the Nurse in Charge of the Acute ward to prepare a response for you here on Care Opinion. As you rightly point out, we cannot change your discharge arrangements, however we can explain and work with you on a solution for further patients admitted for this operation. I would be really keen to hear from you about what would have been useful on discharge for you if you could email me on ckeogh@shdh.org.au. So that we could talk about information sheets or useful resources that could have supported you if the physio wasn't available.

I look forward to hearing more from you, and I would really like to thank you for taking the time to tell us about your journey.

Kind Regards

Chloe

Hi octanscy66,

Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience and I apologise that you were not visited by a Physiotherapist prior to discharge. We endeavour to provide the best experience for our clients and I am very sorry this wasn't the case for you.

We are happy to arrange a physiotherapy appointment ASAP, to provide you with appropriate follow up regarding your recent surgery. I would really appreciate if you could email your contact details to AReception@shdh.org.au or call me on 5033 9390 so we can further discuss your experience and arrange an appointment.

Kind Regards,

Hi octanscy66,

Thank you for taking the time to provide this valuable feedback. It is unfortunate that you were not provided with discharge advice regarding physio requirements. I see that our physio manager has provided feedback and hope that you have been able to make contact with them for immediate feedback and assistance. I will follow up with our Acute Ward NUM and Physio Manager to ensure that up to date information is available for subsequent patients if physiotherapy are unable to attend prior to patient discharge in the future.

Kind regards

Donna Hartland
