Recently I was asked to write why I came into care. My intention to do this happened in 1974 when I had to care for my father for the last 2 years of his life. Looking back now, I think he had a form of dementia which was not diagnosed at the time. He was a very kind man, easy to care for, but with 9 children to care for, the youngest being 2, I was fully occupied. My eldest child was at uni, and one doing nursing, I was able to fit him into my 5 bedroom house. It was such a trying time I decided then that I would not let my children suffer the same pain and they would be free to see their own children and enjoy them.
Then when my husband was in his mid-seventies, he developed dementia. I coped with him for 8 years then, when unable to care for him properly, he went into Waratah. The care he received was wonderful and that frankly decided me to go into care when I felt like it, so 8 years after losing my husband, I became quite ill and ended up in hospital. Then I decided to go into Lochiel House to save my children having to constantly come home to care for me.
Coming into Lochiel 12 months ago just before lockdown with Covid has been wonderful. I found the staff all marvelous and we all feel safe and well looked after. The activities are amazing, sporty and fun.
I know now that my decision was correct and my children are very happy to visit and take me out whenever they are here. I only have family in Orbost. So they are happy I am in great care and love.
"My decision"
