"Midwifery care for second baby"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I got referred to the Midwifery Group Practice program by chance by my GP when I was in the early stages of my second pregnancy. I was unaware of the program prior to this and didn't know you could request to be referred if you knew to ask. What a shame! I wish I had had access to this wonderful service for my first pregnancy.

I was assigned to Lolita and from the first appointment, she was warm, friendly, professional and made me feel very at ease. She took the time to explain how the MGP service works and was always happy to answer any questions I had and make sure I felt good about the care I was receiving.

The regular antenatal appointments gave me peace of mind that bub was growing well and they also allowed me to become more more familiar and comfortable with my care team. My primary midwife was Lolita and my secondary midwife was Carissa. They ensured I had at least two appointments with both people to make sure I felt comfortable with them both.

As it turns out, on the day of my labour and delivery, Carissa was on call, so I was again very grateful to have the opportunity to get to know her before the big day.

I cannot speak highly enough of Carissa's care during my labour and delivery. From my first phone call to her in the early stages of labour at 4am to when she clocked off at the end of her mammoth shift after bub was born, she was warm, caring, took the time to explain to me what was going on and what I could expect next.

We had the opportunity to discuss my birth preferences during my antenatal appointments so she was familiar with my wishes and worked with my partner and I to make sure we felt they were being followed as much as possible. In the end, I had a very positive and empowering birth experience and went home the next day feeling truly cared for.

Lolita and Carissa are outstanding medical professionals in my opinion and I cannot recommend the MGP program highly enough. I wish more people were aware of it and allowed to access it, as I truly think it's a wonderful way to experience your pregnancy, labour, birth and post-partum time.

Thank you Lolita and Carissa. My baby and I are very grateful to have received your wonderful care.
