"Recent experience at A&E"

About: Broome Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I presented at Broome A&E with a reoccurrence of a UTI.  I was seen by a Dr who asked what the issue was. I explained I had had a UTI the previous week, pathology and antibiotics by BRAMS, and it had reoccurred after ceasing antibiotics a few days ago.  They then asked if I have taken pain medication.  I replied yes Panadol given by Triage at A&E and the Dr proceeded to offer stronger pain medication which I declined as I know how addictive and unpleasant they are.  The Dr then spoke to me about drinking cranberry juice and discussed that the reinfection most probably because I stopped the antibiotic too soon.

My spouse is a healthcare practitioner, I took it as prescribed and for a day longer than it was prescribed (Keflex 4x 6days).  The Dr then suggested 2 different antibiotics.  I advised them again Pathology had been done last week I had checked with the GP and had been advised that Keflex which I had been was OK antibiotic for the infection.  The Dr advised me they could not access the pathology as there was no one there at this time of day.  So they prescribed Alprim and sent me on my way with a medical certificate.  The Dr didn't perform any physical examination nor did they check my blood pressure.  My temperature and pulse had been taken by the triage nurse.

I did not improve and the following day I was very unwell and contacted a GP at BRAMS.  I was informed that the original pathology indicated that the infection was resistant to Alprim and the GP at BRAMS advised me that this information was available to the Dr in A& E either by telephoning the Dr on call for BRAMS or via logging into the BRAMS medical system.

This was extremely disappointing and frustrating as I have now been on 4 antibiotics for the treatment of this infection and extremely unwell.   My concern is, I re-present to a dr, but I believe there are many in this community that might not re-present and get very unwell.

Dear broome99,

Thankyou so much for your feedback and for bringing our attention to this matter and I am very sorry to hear that you were dissatisfied with the treatment you received at Broome hospital.

At this time of year, to cope with the increased number of people coming through ED for care we rely heavily on visiting locum doctors to assist our local team. We endeavour to orient these staff to all the local systems but unfortunately, as there is an enormous amount of information to be passed on, some things can be missed or not retained. You are absolutely correct that we do have means to access results ordered by BRAMS staff.

We will use this an opportunity to review and improve upon our orientation for visiting doctors to ensure that they are aware of these processes and to avoid this occurring again in the future.

Again, thankyou for your valuable feedback and for facilitating our ability to improve the quality of our service provision.

Best regards

Melanie Little,

Acting SMO.
