"My relative's operation"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department Bunbury Hospital / Medical Ward Bunbury Hospital / Surgical Ward

(as a parent/guardian),

I took my adult child after many visits to local doctors to emergency in Bunbury Reginal! They operate that night!

It was a perineal cyst!

For the next two years we saw wound clinic then silver chain!

The pain and the bleeding (75% of the time) has totally ruled our lives!

Even when we tried a few days away we had to stay in one so silver chain could visit! After a year the doctor decided we should have another op to try and close the open wound!

This got cancelled 4 times!

Then 2 years after first op, my adult child actually got their operation!

2 weeks later my adult child ended up back in emergency as it was infected and stitches all (but I recall 1 they missed) taken out..this has now been such a trauma for them!

We were told after 2 nights in Bunbury we would hear from another hospital about a plastic surgeon..at the time of writing this story, that was over 6 weeks ago!

I have spoken to our surgeon and doctor all can not do any thing!

My adult child is in so much pain and I believe is now worse off than where we were before their op! They have a large open wound in their bottom...surely this is a priority...I'm even wondering if mistakes were made off their care!

What do we do now! My adult child has no life..just waiting for dressings to be changed, too tired and in too much pain to do much moving around! They have an intellectual disability, I'm hoping that's why we have been seemingly forgotten!

Dear warmts89,

Thank you for sharing your story with us about your adult child’s healthcare journey at Bunbury Hospital.

I am so very sorry and equally concerned to read about your child’s health issues and the impact on your daily lives as you continue to experience problems. Non-healing wounds can be very challenging, and I want to reassure you that I take your concerns seriously. I would certainly like to facilitate ongoing care and follow up the plastic surgery referral.

So that I can do this and if you are comfortable, I encourage you to contact our consumer feedback team on SWfeedback@health.wa.gov.au or call us on 08 9722 1521. Our surgical head of department, Dr Jacinta Cover, can then discuss with you in person or on the phone a plan to facilitate ongoing care.

We genuinely value feedback and are committed to listening and learning from the experiences of our patients and their families, as we get to hear about when we do things well and learn where we might fall short.

Once again, I apologise for your experience and I hope to hear from you soon.

Dr Altaf Khoja

A/Director of Medical Services

Bunbury Hospital
