"Pregnancy/birth"

About: Karratha Health Campus / Maternity Unit

(as the patient),

My husband and I moved to Karratha when I was 30 weeks pregnant, I was really excited to have the facilities of a new hospital for birth and going forward as a family.

I presented to maternity several times due to reduced movements, and was also placed on regular monitoring due to low fluid later in my pregnancy. Every single time I attended the midwives were amazing and made me feel so calm. We decided to induce due to continued reduced movement, I was extremely nervous about this and worried I would end up with an emergency C-section. We had a lovely midwife and student in the morning, but when shift change happened we got the most incredible midwife. I feel she is 100% the reason I didn’t end up in theatre, she was such a calming presence and was guiding me through exactly what needed to happen. We had a few issues at the end with bub getting stuck (shoulder dystocia) and a small haemorrhage, then my placenta wouldn’t come out but through all of that we still avoided any theatre. It was extremely rushed and stressful things definitely did not go as planned at the end.

My midwife stayed back even though she had already done a double shift to make sure that I was ok and introduce me to the next shift. We were able to do a debrief with her a few days later due to an extended stay, and I felt she was so much more supportive than other clinicians in regards to knowing what actually happened and how it happened.

I absolutely loved all of the midwives we came into contact with but I would love for the MGP program to be implemented in Karratha. To have continuous care with the same team throughout pregnancy would be amazing, especially with the facilities that we have in Karratha. I was lucky meeting most of the midwives before birth, however even then the midwives I had on the day were all new to me! It would be so reassuring to go through pregnancy with the same team and not have to do GP/hospital shared care as you do not get offered the same support. In my opinion, please consider introducing MGP to Karratha.

Dear Scorpio24,

Thank you for sharing your patient journey on Care Opinion, we truly appreciate the feedback.

It is great to hear the lovely words you have for your Midwife, I have shared these with the Clinical Midwife Specialist who also appreciated it.

To ensure consistency and service delivery we are currently concerntrating on delivering to the West Pilbara region which goes beyond Karratha to the other communities and towns. I know that the Midwives when possible also arrange for this consistency after agreement from the patient.

Kind regards,

Liam Avery, Operations Manager, WACHS West Pilbara
