"A caravanning holiday emergency"

About: Kalbarri Health Centre Telehealth Service - WACHS Midwest

(as a relative),

My husband and I were at the end of a six week north west/Kimberley caravan adventure.  The last 4 days we were at a caravan park in Kalbarri, 2 days in my husband became unwell, his right lower leg was inflamed and swollen, we also noticed an inflamed area at the top of his thigh.  We were unsure of the cause, most likely mosquito bites? A sting from the ocean? Or perhaps muddy waters.

We went to Kalbarri health centre.  As soon as we arrived my husband was assessed by a registered nurse and very quickly a Doctor from the telehealth service was in touch via video call, and he was admitted.

Over the next 3 hours my husband became very unwell, he was commenced on Intra Venous antibiotics.  His care was outstanding, it was always on the cards that he may be transferred out, he ended up staying for 4 nights.  Even though we were in a remote area at no time did my husband feel vulnerable, the Doctors called frequently and the nurses explained every option and scenario to him.

My story is of course a little different, I was in the caravan park and felt anxious about the what ifs… what will happen if he goes to Geraldton? What will happen if he goes to Perth? What will I do about the caravan and how to get home?  I’m a capable driver but I really wouldn’t feel safe towing a big van all that way.  The thought of being separated from him was very daunting.  The caravan park staff were lovely and did everything possible to help me.

The most important aspect of the whole experience was the care we received, I was well cared for too.  I can truthfully say that every single member of staff we met were truly amazing.  Thankyou to Cindy ( nurse manager) and all the staff that cared for us, too many names to list, but hopefully they all know how much we appreciated everything. The care received saved us from the trauma of a hospital transfer.

We got home safely, my husbands leg is still healing but slowly improving.

Thankyou all.

Dear horologiumyj76,

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion.

I was sorry to hear of your husband’s illness at the end of your holiday. I hope it did not detract too much from a memorable trip.

The team at Kalbarri are so passionate about providing high-quality care for their local community and the numerous tourists who visit throughout the year. I was delighted to read how well they looked after your husband and supported you at such a worrying time. The Telehealth team do amazing work to ensure that consumers in the remote areas of our state are still able to access quality, comprehensive care. Your feedback has been shared with the telehealth team so they can acknowledge their excellent staff.

I will take great pleasure in thanking Cindy and the entire Kalbarri team for their sterling efforts in your husband’s care.

I hope your husband’s leg continues to heal and you will be out on your next caravanning adventure soon.

Kind regards,

Di Franklin
