"Inadequate medical care"

About: St John Urgent Care Centres

(as the patient),

I went to St John Urgent Care in WA and saw a doctor. I had been advised by another doctor at the same practice to come back if my hearing had not returned - so I was back. One of my ears has been blocked and constantly ringing during a throat infection; the throat infection had cleared up but my ear was still affected and really impacting my quality of life, mental health, and ability to work.

The doctor said my ear looked fine, a little red, but that the antibiotics I was already on should help it to go down, and suggested that I take some nurofen and panadol to help reduce the swelling. They seemed unphased that this was week 3 of my being unwell and that it was my 4th doctor visit for the same ailment. They wrote me a note to be absent from work but did not specify that there are tasks I'm still able to do. After work told me they could not accept me back without a more specific note from the doctor, they refused to amend the note, stating that if I wanted to return to work, I would have to visit again.

The next day, I went to another GP and pleaded that they take me seriously given the longevity of my condition and impact to both my personal and professional life. Upon examination, this second doctor advised that my ear is very clearly infected and prescribed me a decongestant as well as a steroid to take alongside my current antibiotics. He also wrote me a note for work so that I would be able to return and complete the tasks I'm capable of while being hearing impaired (replying to just emails rather than phone calls).

I'm thankful that I received proper care at the second clinic and that the doctor took me seriously, but very confused at how the initial doctor - who saw me 24 hours prior - insisted that I was fine. I was also really disappointed that they seemingly didn't put any care into my note for work and didn't care that their apparent lack of care/detail resulted in my inability to return, lest I pay for another consultation and request another note. We had discussed the nature of my work during our consultation, I understand they knew it was just my hearing that was affected. I understand the clinic is busy but the subsequent examination I received today (which saw me actually cared for) took probably less than 5 minutes. This has really damaged my trust and I feel like I shouldn't have had to go through this just so a doctor would take my condition seriously and agree to treat me properly.
