"A positive mental health experience in ED"

About: Albany Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

As a parent, my teenager has been experiencing some scary signs of depression - low mood, suicidal ideation, being able to enjoy life. After battling with these thoughts for over 12 months, late one night, they agreed to go to ED for some help. Triage Nurse Jacob was reassuring and made my teen feel safe. While we waited to see a doctor, I thought Jacob and the security team did a brilliant job with crowd control! Handled with such professionalism, in a calm and non-confrontational manner.

Dr Elliot was amazing. He spoke to my teen with kindness and compassion. He did not rush the assessment, and was able to gently unravel their thoughts and work through a plan for further assistance with the CAMHS team.

As we left ED in the early hours of the morning, my teen commented that was the best doctor they'd ever spoken to. A positive experience in a stressful situation. Thank you.

Dear Morningstar1

Thank you for your lovely feedback. As you know EDs are complex environments and can be confronting places so we are always grateful to hear of positive experiences. Your teenager’s story has been shared with the ED team, the Hospital’s leadership team as well as the Regional leadership. Most importantly we have shared this story with Nurse Jacob and Doctor Elliot and we agree that they are both great health care practitioners.

We hope your teen is continuing to receive the support that they need and whilst we hope not to see them again any time soon please do present to the ED if you or your teen have any concerns.

Best wishes

The Critical Care Leadership Team

Drs John Van der Post and William MacDonald and Clinical Nurse Manager Julie Tomkins
