"Waiting time for care"

About: Joondalup Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I there for over for 5 hours with my child who has had a serious accident, they were left bleeding profusely from a head injury for over 3 hours with no apparent medical attention, they have a private paramedic company triaging patients in the hallways, I saw an elderly patient was seemingly in agony and calling for help , I recall the paramedics were sitting around talking amongst themselves and seemingly not attending to the patients. I believe these private parmedics can't even give a pandaol, in my opinion, it's a joke.

Dear hadarwb69

Thank you for taking the time to share your Emergency Department experience with us. It must have been distressing for you to wait with your child, following a serious accident and bleeding from a head injury, for over 3 hours with no apparent medical attention.

All patients attending the Emergency Department are assessed, or triaged, by a senior nurse upon arrival and allocated a triage score. This score is called the Australian Triage Score (ATS) and aims to ensure that patients presenting to the Emergency Departments are treated in the order of their clinical urgency and allocated to the most appropriate assessment and treatment area. Patients with life threatening injuries or conditions are seen immediately. During busy periods patients may wait longer than the expected time, however the emergency staff monitor patients for any signs of deterioration, which will lead to an escalation of care.

Paramedics have been brought in to provide additional support in a very busy and acute environment. Whilst paramedics don’t triage patients, they do provide care to patients alongside the emergency team.

I hope you child is recovering well from their injury. To facilitate a review of treatment your child received please feel free at any time to contact the Consumer Liaison Team at consumerliaison.jhc@ramsayhealth.com.au or alternatively you can call and speak with the team on 08 9400 9672.

Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and safe New Year

Kind Regards

Kevin Hartley
