"Parking"

About: Wonthaggi Hospital

(as the patient),

I found parking was inadequate and I was directed to a grass paddock, previously used as the hospital helipad.

The slope leading to the entrance to ambulatory care was covered in gravel, was loose and I believe could have led to a fall.

I am an older person who is recovering from breast cancer. I was visiting the lymphodema physiotherapist. I have no complaints about the service I received but getting safe access from the temporary car park I found was a major problem.

Normally there is no trouble getting parking in a place that is accessible to ambulatory care.

I wonder whether staff have been using carpark spaces that should have been available to patients, as the situation when I came out of the service had not improved, still no parking spaces. The hospital is going through a rebuilding process but I believe the needs of patients and the community must come first.

Dear doradoxx53,

Sadly, you have described our carparking issue perfectly - please accept our apologies. We currently don't have enough car parks, largely because of all the work being undertaken on our site, and we are using a grassed area and unsealed areas as overflow. You are also absolutely correct that these unsealed carparks should be used by staff in the first instance, so that our patients can use the sealed areas. I will remind our staff to park in these areas, but it is also true that some days of the week are worse than others with more patient and visitor cars than our sealed parks can accommodate. We will be able to soon take over a temporary car park for a few weeks that will reduce the impact for our patients and visitors for a short-term period. We also have several live discussions underway to increase our parking offerings more permanently. I can assure you this is an active issue for our team, and we will keep pursuing our additional car parking options so that patients in the future don't have to experience what you did. Once again, please accept my apologies.

Sincerely yours, Jan.
