"Detached retina"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / Emergency Department Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / Orthoptics Department

(as the patient),

The vision in my right eye developed a dark shadow at the bottom of the eye. I was advised to attend the emergency room at the Sydney Eye Hospital for diagnosis. They diagnosed a detached retina and immediately admitted me for surgery. Unfortunately the operating theatre was busy with other emergency cases (it was a public holiday) and I had to wait in the hospital ward overnight for surgery the following morning. I was first in for surgery the next day. I was given a sedative and local anaesthetic to the right eye. I slept through the 1 hour procedure, waking up back in the ward. I remained in Hospital resting face down for the next 24 hours. The next day I was given eye drops and discharged. All the staff I dealt with at the hospital were caring and attentive to my needs.

Dear Gridcatch,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us about your experience at Sydney/Sydney Eye Hospital.

I am pleased to hear that your Retinal Detachment surgery and subsequent recovery on the ward proceeded smoothly after your emergency admission.

It is wonderful to hear that all the staff you interacted with were caring and attentive to your needs during your stay.

Best wishes with your surgery recovery,

Jon Magill
