"My child's experience"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Outpatient Services

(as a parent/guardian),

My young child had an appointment at Geraldton Fracture clinic recently. The Dr that saw them, I’m really disgusted in how they treated my eldest child who took my young child to the appointment. I have severe osteoarthritis and walking into the clinic would have been too painful. My eldest child said they would take my young child in. My young child injured their foot recently, since then it has healed, we have given them all the antibiotics etc.

My child's appointment was mid-morning and they made them wait 3 hours and as any child would, they were getting restless, they were starting to yell at my eldest child and my eldest child was already trying to keep calm. When they went through my eldest child put my youngest child on the bed and lifted up their leg for the doctor to see. I understand the first thing the Doctor said was why aren't they wearing shoes, I’m going to report this to child services, their foot could have gotten infected.

We missed the first appointment because I didn’t get a message about it so I made a second appointment and I knew by then the foot would be healed. My eldest child was sobbing by the time they got to the car.

Dear junesh76

Thank you for sharing your childrens’ story on Care Opinion.

I would like to offer my apologies for the delay and distress we caused your children. If a clinician has any concerns for the welfare for a child, we have a duty of care that it is raised with the responsible adult present. If necessary, they may seek assistance of a social worker to provide family support. This should be discussed with the accompanying adult in a compassionate and non-judgmental manner.

I would like to speak with you to listen your story in more detail and enable me to investigate fully and discuss with the clinician involved. This will allow us to have the clinician reflect on how their actions made your family feel and support them as we strive to provide the compassionate care for our community.

My name is Dr Ranjit Paul, I am the Director Medical Services at Geraldton Hospital. I can be contacted on (08) 9956 8125 or you can email me at WACHS-MidwestMD@health.wa.gov.au

I do hope I hear from you soon.

Kind regards

Dr Ranjit Paul
