"Sale of high sugar drinks in vending machine in waiting area of ED"

About: Broome Health Campus

(as the patient),

I recently attend the Broome ED centre and noticed the presence of a vending machine selling high sugar drinks in the ED waiting room.

I found this a little concerning when the region is grappling with medical issues associated with obesity, renal failure and dental problems that have direct links to the consumption of high sugar drinks

My preference would be a vending machine that stocked bottles of filtered water only.

Good afternoon MJM,

Firstly, I would like to apologise for the delay in responding to your feedback, it is always my intent to reply in a more timely manner than this.

Your concern for the well-being of the people in the Kimberley Region is greatly appreciated, and feedback regarding how we can improve processes to address these issues is always welcome.

Providing food and drinks for the public, patients and visitors presents us with a difficult balance to achieve. WA Health services are required to comply with the Health Options WA Food and Nutrition Policy, which provides guidance on the range and type of food and drinks that should be made available at outlets including vending machines.

Broome Hospital, and other outlets, undergo regular audits to monitor our compliance with this policy. One of the limitations to altering the type of food and drinks on offer is the shape and style of the rows and containers in the vending machine itself.

We will continue to work towards improving the range of food and drinks provided, and we will continue to provide the free filtered water that is available near the vending machines as one of the healthy options available.

Regards,

Margi Faulkner
