"Post operative care of patient with aphasia"

About: Box Hill Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My elderly parent was admitted to BHH with a fractured femur. While the surgery was successful, the post-op care they received was much less so. While I was there for most evening meals, they were unable to eat by themselves and no nurses helped them nor drew attention to their nutritional needs. When they were discharged we found bed sores after only five days in hospital.

It would seem that the staff treat an acute condition but have no idea of what full patient care means when it applies to those unable to fend for themselves.

The hospital's poor reputation appears to have been well earned.

Dear full patient care needed,

I was very concerned to read the story of your parent’s experience at Box Hill Hospital following their admission with a fractured femur and would like to follow this up as a matter of priority. We take your concerns very seriously. If you could email me directly on david.plunkett@easternhealth.org.au with some details, I would like to reassure you that we will look into the care of your parent and get back in touch with you following our investigation.

I am sorry that in this instance we have not provided the high standard of care that our staff pride themselves on and once again, encourage you to contact me.

Thank you for sharing your story on Patient Opinion. Your feedback enables us to review and improve the care that we provide.

Kind Regards,

David

Dear full patient care needed

Thank you for making direct contact with me. As mentioned above, the details you have provided allow us to undertake a full and complete investigation of your mother's care.

As this investigation will take some time to complete, I will ask the Patient Relations Advisors in the Eastern Health Centre for Patient Experience to keep in contact with you as the investigation progresses to conclusion. Should you have any questions while the investigation is being undertaken, please contact the Patient Relations Advisors on 1800EASTERN.

I would like to apologise again for your mother's experience as this is not the standard of care I support or our patients should experience.

Many thanks again and kind regards

David
