"Cancelled surgery"

About: Ipswich Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

No wonder there is a backlog of surgeries, when a patient is ready to have knee surgery and the surgeon says no I'm not doing it today. It seemed as though even the nurse was dumbfounded. A young patient says they have taken holidays and time off work, but the surgeon says, just take another two weeks. I think the surgeon obviously doesn't have a mortgage and other payments to make.

Dear surgery delays

We can’t imagine how frustrating and disruptive it is for patients when their surgery is delayed or cancelled.

There are a number of reasons why surgery can be cancelled at the last minute. For example, sometimes we need to cancel a surgery to free up an operating theatre for a patient who unexpectedly requires a lifesaving operation.

Regardless of the reason, we are sincerely sorry for the distress and inconvenience that surgery cancellation causes for our patients and their families.

If you would like to speak with someone about your concerns, you are welcome to contact us at the Consumer Liaison Service on 0409 275 503 or email WMH_CLO@health.qld.gov.au

Best wishes
