"Emergency Department Visit"

Last week I accompanied my elderly parents to the local ED.  Mum has Alzheimers and Dad is doing his best as primary carer, however when it comes to health related problems he does call out for help.  After triage, we saw the Clerk as is the usual process.  I have to compliment the staff on their professionalism and friendliness.  A fairly recent process is the application of a name band, never used to happen unless you were admitted into the ward.  I understand that it is necessary even in ED and I think it is a good idea.  However, the poor Clerk only had a tiny little window, I'd say about 15cm x 15cm, to try and fit the name band on Mum's wrist.  It was either the patient put their arm through the hole or the Clerk turns themselves inside out to get their hands through for a patient who isn't able to, to apply the band.  I must say this Clerk did a great job, but I did feel sorry for her.  The hospital needs to find a better way of doing this both for the comfort of the patient and efficiency for the Clerks.

Presenting at ED can be a stressful time so I was pleased to hear that you and your parents were met with a friendly face. WA Country Health Service continually aims to provide professional, high quality, compassionate care and I will ensure your comments are passed on to the team. I know they will really appreciate the compliment.

The Geraldton Hospital ED team are exploring new ways to ensure all people receiving care have the recommended identifiers according to national standards. The name bands you mentioned are a relevantly new initiative and there have been some challenges with its introduction. The team are working to make this change as seamless as possible and your feedback is very much appreciated as it will help in improving the process.
