"Sent home in pain."

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I recently went to the ED at Bunbury Regional due to crippling stabbing pain in my lower right abdomen radiating out to testicles.

Blood in stools, small soft pebble sized, painful in abdomen to pass. Only 2 or 3 at a time, but constant - every half hour or so.

Was admitted to Surgical Ward

Consultant advised need for colonoscopy - however, I believe due to budget constraints, it couldn't be performed in hospital and I need to have it done as an outpatient privately.

Was discharged with anti-inflammatories and opioid pain killers. Was receiving these meds whilst in hospital.

The doctor went home before doing discharge paperwork or take home scripts. I was told that my only options were to leave and go back to the ED if I wanted pain relief or write a complaint.

I left in as much pain as I arrived. I felt I was made to feel useless and like I was making the whole thing up.

Dear beatsonic

I am sorry to hear that you are not happy following your recent admission to Bunbury Hospital in the Surgical Ward.

Your Patient Opinion advice indicates that you remain unwell and possibly still in pain. As such, I strongly recommend that you call me on 08 9722 1421, so that I can, with your consent, review the care provided, and make contact directly with the Consultant if necessary.

In the absence of my knowing your details, I can respond regarding what should have happened for your admission.

Your discharge paper work and script should have been provided to you as the normal process for any inpatient being discharged. It appears that this may not have occurred. I do apologise that this does not seem to have occurred and should you make contact with me, I can arrange for the discharge documentation to be made available to you and your GP (if not already), as well as review the circumstances which lead to your not getting a discharge script.

I understand that the Consultant advised that you may need a colonoscopy. A colonoscopy or other investigation, may be required to be performed urgently or on most occasions, at a planned time in the future. If your condition was such, that the Colonoscopy was required urgently, the procedure would be undertaken whilst you were an inpatient.

There is no financial reason to delay a colonoscopy, which is required urgently.

If your need for a colonoscopy is still required this can be performed as an outpatient. The colonoscopy is usually a day procedure and as a public patient there would be no charge.

Your General Practitioner is best placed to advise and progress a referral for a colonoscopy.

I would appreciate it if you could call me to discuss, and in doing so, ensure your pain is being managed and enable your care to be reviewed and ensure that you have the correct information and referral pathways.

Yours sincerely

Dr Geoff Williamson

District Director of Medical Services

Bunbury Hospital
