About: Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital The Prince Charles Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Late last year I suffered a minor fracture of the ankle. I presented at Prince Charles ED and the treatment was excellent. I left in a moon boot with crutches and was informed that the Fracture Clinic at the Royal would contact me shortly.

My appointment at the Royal followed 11 days later. The waiting time was minimal, but so was the consult with the doctor, who had a look, said that it could either be treated as a sprain or a fracture (4 weeks in boot or 6 weeks in boot - do I have a guess?) and suggested that I should start weight bearing on the foot.

I received notification for my next appointment which was towards the end of the next month. The wait was over 2 hours - 40 minutes of which was in an observation room with many of the faculty standing in the corridor talking about the upcoming long weekend. Eventually a doctor came who looked at my foot and said that I should probably start weight bearing on it. I informed her that I had already been doing that for the past 4 weeks under instructions from my previous visit. She then said that I could remove the boot, which I did. I was asked whether I would seek physio treatment and I asked that the hospital contact me regarding further treatment. The doctor said that they would.

To date, I have received no further correspondence from the fracture clinic. After two weeks of painful hobbling, I sought private out of pocket Physio where I have been informed that there may have been breaks in my toes from the initial fall which were not initially picked up. Also, as I waited for the doctor on my second visit, I noticed a sign on the door informing doctors that no matter how insignificant the break, all fracture patients should receive a bone care / management plan. Still waiting...
