In a volunteer/carer capacity, I have had an insightful and great experience of visiting the Eye Clinic @ RPH over the period of a month recently. I have had my final visit accompanying a patient with slight brain impairment following a car accident 10 years ago.
Our first visit was for a pre-op briefing. Upon arrival at reception, we were greeted and asked to take a seat in a specific seating area. Each staff member involved in the overall process, simply couldn't have been more professional, impressive indeed. I would like to add I was simply 'blown away' with the number of patients waiting to be seen, and the overall efficiency of staff dealing with such demands. May I add, not all patients were well behaved or even pleasant.
On the second visit, we attended the admissions clinic in the early morning, prior to the patient having cataract surgery. Every step in the process was conducted so efficiently with staff very much 'under the pump'. The third visit was the following morning, the only shortcoming, we waited rather long to be informed by a nurse the notes hadn't arrived following surgery. To counteract this, the nurse then attended to the patient, following scans and finally, we saw Dr Caroline who performed the surgery. What a delightful professional, so impressive! On our final visit, we were attended to rather quickly, commendations to Vickey (nurse) for her caring nature and brightness. The sonographer was also caring, friendly and professional. Lastly, to be seen and cleared by Dr Robert, who was impressed by the success of the surgery, with the patient having almost perfect vision, marvellous!
In concluding, it was an enlightening experience for us both to see first-hand how a busy public hospital department operates at such a high level of efficiency and professionalism with many constraints! We, the people of WA, are indeed blessed to have such a wonderful public hospital located in the city centre, with such brilliant and caring professionals. Thank you so much indeed!
"A wonderful, enlightening experience"
