My mum used to see an eye specialist in Liverpool close by, costs $200 on pension - $30 back. She is recovering from another corneal graft (5th) that will never recover her sight, but has to be done.
The other option to see the eye clinic in Sydney for free. Can never get an early appointment and my elderly mother has to catch 2 trains and buses from Fairfield to get there and recovering from broken leg walking on a frame to save money.
We thought she was okay. Not!
She again waited many hours and had scans, had stitches removed from her corneal graft and had drops in so she had trouble getting home that night, as she couldn't even see properly on her frame and in pain from stitches in her eye removed.
If I'd known they were doing that and the wait, I would have come too and taken a day off work. It shouldn't come to this, but this is what our health system is now.
I suggested a cab. None available. It took her another 2 hours for her to get home in the dark on her walking frame with little sight.
My elderly mum came home in tears that night at 7:30 pm and left that morning at 10 for her 3 pm appointment. Left in the afternoon at 5:30 with all peak hour traffic on the train.
I'm disgusted at the treatment of my elderly Mum that has lived here for generations and now has to suffer this in her old age.
