I had a stroke at around 10pm one evening. The mobile intensive care ambulance arrived very promptly and I was in Box Hill Hospital before midnight in Ward 9. 2, a specialised ward for stroke patients. I had a CT scan very quickly (necessary to know whether or not to give blood thinners) and received excellent care. After 6 days I was discharged to the Peter James Centre for rehab, where I spent 12 days as an inpatient before discharge to home under a program known as Early Supported Discharge, which is intended for patients who are recovering relatively quickly. Then followed 4 weeks of intensive physio and occupational therapy and doctor review (mostly at Peter James, but with some home visits) before my final discharge. I understand that there is a 6 week follow-up doctor appointment. All through my experience I received an outstanding level of care from competent and enthusiastic staff and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Thank you Eastern Health for my recovery to date. My only negative comment is the inability of Eastern Health to schedule timely follow-up tests such as Echocardiogram and Holter Monitor which are needed to further assess the reasons for my stroke - I have been told that these may take 4 months to schedule.
