"Post operative neurosurgical experience"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as the patient),

Following transnasal neurosurgery I was transferred from recovery to the High Dependency Unit of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. While in the High Dependency Unit I received competent care from all staff. However, the care I received from a nurse called Amy was above and beyond. Amy was not only well trained and efficient, but she had empathy. I was with Amy through a particularly difficult part of my stay where I had not slept well and was worried about my condition. Amy showed kindness, gentleness and empathy in such a way that I did not feel pitied or looked down upon. She showed great respect when dealing with my person, such that I didn't feel uncomfortable or embarrassed when she had to remove my catheter. Amy also showed humour and a keen sense of when this was both appropriate and needed.

There are many fine skills that you can teach a nurse, and many medical text books, but the type of care that Amy provided displayed skills that go beyond this. She is a valuable asset to patient care and I will always be grateful for the kindness and support she showed me.

Dear hotelkm97

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your words of thanks and appreciation for the care you received whilst a patient in the High Dependency Unit of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. We are very fortunate to have staff who possess both excellent clinical skills and demonstrate great care and compassion for our patients. It was heartening to read about your experience with Amy who displayed her skills above and beyond to deliver the best possible care. Our motto at Charlie’s is to ‘put patient’s first’ and I am very glad that this was how Amy made you feel.

It will be my pleasure to pass on your thanks and praise to Amy to ensure she is recognised for the wonderful care she provides.

Thank you again for your kind message and I hope you are making a good recovery.

Kind regards,

Geraldine Carlton
