"Spinal Tumor"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Neurosurgical Unit

(as the patient),

I have been waiting  for an appt. with neurosurgery at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital for eleven months. I was told probably around three years - that was confirmed by the dept when I  rang them. I don't want to push in on anyone, but I have to look at my needs too.

I am in despair. I was having lower back, groin, buttocks and leg pain, so I had an MRI which showed a nerve sheath tumor. Underneath my left foot there is pins and needles now and some numbness. Groin and lower back is affecting my every moment and certain positions causes even worse pain, esp in bed when laying down.

Seeing the whole me

Seeing the whole me

I am living with this every day and it's unbearable. I need to speak to a neurosurgeon to explain and to hopefully answer some of my questions.

It sounds strange but I am also getting slight pins and needles in my left hand now and I need to talk to someone as I can't go on like this.

There was an issue with the dept many years ago, but I have never had the chance to talk to the relevant people about what happened. I never wanted to resort to writing this, but it was suggested to me and I thought I've got nothing to lose. (I hope.)

I don't know if anyone reads these letters, but I am begging to see someone who will just look at the symptoms and discuss with me what's happening.

Please just give me the opportunity.

Thanks for taking the time to read this letter.

Dear izarsb37

Thank you for taking the time to tell us of your concerns regarding your Neurosurgical appointment. I am very sorry to hear about your condition and the pain and distress that this is causing.

I acknowledge the wait time for outpatient appointments can sometimes be lengthy and would like to reassure you that you have been triaged according to information provided by your GP on the referral sent through to SCGH. If your symptoms have worsened or you have new test results which indicate a change in your condition from the initial referral, I would advise you to make a further appointment to see you GP for a new referral to SCGH Neurosurgery. This way, the doctors will have updated information to be able to reassess the timing of your appointment.

I do hope this has clarified things for you. You are welcome to contact the Patient Liaison Office at SCGH on (08) 6457 2867 if you have any further queries.

Thank you again for your feedback and best wishes.

Kind regards

Geraldine Carlton
