"TRUS Prostate biopsy"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Urology Department

(as a relative),

A visiting Urologist informed my husband that he needed to have a prostate biopsy taken and that as it could not be done in our regional town, so it would have to be done in Perth. I queried this as I knew that in the recent past this procedure was routinely performed in our town. He reiterated that it was not now possible. We duly traveled 400 kms to Perth where the procedure was performed in the afternoon and we returned to our hometown the next day.

We subsequently queried why TRUS Prostate biopsies are no longer performed in our regional town and were informed that they are, however the attending Urologist insists on having radiology equipment that is unavailable in our town. My husband was never offered the opportunity to have the procedure done in our town, in fact he was repeatedly told it was not possible.
We duly submitted the PATS form on our return to our hometown. We have now received a letter informing us we must provide a letter from the GP or the Urologist giving the reason we had to travel to Perth for this procedure.

Dear twiga64,

Thank you for telling us of your concerns in relation to the availability of Urology procedures in your local town. I acknowledge and appreciate that it must be very frustrating to have to drive long distances to access health care. I also appreciate how disappointed you must have felt when the options regarding the procedure were not clearly explained to your husband and yourself – I am very sorry this did not occur.

I wish to reassure you that we aim to provide the best possible care for all patients and that we take your feedback very seriously. I would like to assist you further with the issues you have raised and encourage you to contact the Patient Liaison Service at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital on (08) 6457 2867 so that we can obtain further details and investigate the concerns you have raised more fully.

Once again, I wish to express my sincere apologies and hope that you will be happy to contact us.

Kind regards

Janet Zagari
