"Service received at ENT clinic"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

I presented with my son at ENT clinic recently and was disappointed by the consultant's casual attitude towards my son's sinusitis condition. He examined him and told him he required surgery and went through the surgery process and told him he would have to wait up to a year. However, when asked what can my son do to manage his condition for the next year the response was nothing. The consultant described chronic sinusitis as having diabetics - it's life long and you have to deal with it. But I'm sure diabetic patients are given a treatment plan to manage their condition. In the meantime, my son's mental health, employment and physical health deteriorate. Why is the wait so long for surgery? Why is no treatment plan is given in the meantime?

Dear echowx75

Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding your son’s recent appointment with the ENT Outpatient Service. I acknowledge and appreciate that the wait times for surgery can be longer than expected and wish to reassure you that the triaging for procedures is based on clinical presentation. I also appreciate how disappointed you must have felt when there was no information offered to help manage your son’s condition – I am very sorry this did not occur.

I have contacted the Surgical Division regarding your concerns and they would like to assist further. In order to do this we require some details regarding your son and ask that you contact the Patient Liaison Service at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital on 6457 2867.

Once again, I wish to express my sincere apologies and hope that you will be happy to contact us.

Kind regards

Janet Zagari
