"Communication after surgery"

I recently had a day procedure at Osborne Park Hospital. Nursing staff and support staff were great, helpful and took good care of me. Thanks all. My only disappointment was that I wish the consultant or his registrar came to see me after surgery to let me know how the procedure went. Instead, I was given a piece of paper with the results of the procedure and was told to make another appointment for the tests that were done by nursing staff. Though the registrar did see me before the procedure it would have been good to have seen me after too. I realize doctors are busy, however, what is a standard procedure for them might be a big thing to a patient. So checking on them after surgery would have been caring or even a follow-up phone call the next day would have been appropriate. Thanks.

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience of Osborne Park Hospital. It was so pleasing to read your words of appreciation for the nursing and support staff that cared for you when you had your day procedure; I will ensure that your message of thanks is passed onto them.

I acknowledge the disappointment you felt at not seeing your doctor following the procedure and prior to discharge. Unfortunately it is not always practical for the medical staff to do this as they are often still in the operating theatre with other patients. I appreciate that despite receiving the written information in regards to your procedure, that an opportunity to discuss this with the doctor would have been valuable for you.

We welcome your feedback as this helps us to improve our services and as such your story has been shared with the Head of Department for Surgery, the Surgical Services Clinical Nurse Manager and the Theatre Clinical Nurse Manager with the request for surgeons to consider follow-up visits post-surgery (or procedure) where possible. I would be happy to update you in a few weeks in regards to this.
