"Excellent care and staff"

About: Kerang Hospital / Urgent Care Centre

(as the patient),

I presented at Kerang District Hospital at 10pm at night with severe neck, chest and back plain. My wife rang the hospital as we left to let them know I was coming in. I was met at the main door by an RN, taken to the ward by wheelchair to emergency. I had all the necessary tests done. I was kept in hospital for 2 days and more tests were done. The staff were all excellent and the care given was great.

Dear skybn53,

Thank you for taking the time to write your story. I was really interested to read about your journey in the healthcare system. My interest is due in large part to the time of presentation (10pm at night), as this is after the time that we have Doctors on call for presentations through the Urgent Care Centre (as you did). This has been a really big change for our community and our staff over the last 12 months, when the Doctors requested to if possible have an uninterrupted nights sleep, so that they are ready to work the next day.

In the past people have been used to going to a hospital to see a Doctor at all hours of the day and night, however in the last year we have started to use a "nurse-led model of care" where our nursing team are able to start many of the processes, tests, observations, assessments and things that help the Doctor to have a bigger picture of your health concern when they do get in to see you, and the Doctors get to have some time off, and a good nights sleep overnight, or if it is during the day they can continue to see patients in their clinics who have appointments booked.

Please be reassured that if the tests and observations done by the nurses showed that you urgently needed to see a Doctor you would have been given this opportunity either by phone consult, or by telehealth, and if your condition was critical you would have been transferred out to receive the care that you needed.

So, I am really pleased that you had a positive experience, and a few days in hospital to get yourself well again. Your story is very reassuring and I will be certain to pass on my thanks to the nursing, administration and catering and domestic staff who cared for you that first night you were admitted and over the course of the few days.

Kind Regards

Chloe
