"My mum's recent respite stay"

About: St Joseph's Nursing Home Lismore

(as a carer),

My elderly mother has dementia and errs on the angry side most of the time. Her personality and our relationship, which was an extremely close love and friendship, has changed dramatically. As her full time carer for the past 4 years, mum has visited 5 local nursing homes for respite. All are okay but at St Joseph's in Lismore she seems to be suited to their style of care. She always says she had a wonderful holiday and made many friends. The nursing staff always welcome her whole heartily and when I pick her up she is radiant and refreshed. St Joseph's staff told me they match residents with others who are similar in their dementia journey so can socialise and relate at that level. My mum still holds a basic conversation, can have a laugh (although her strong sense of humour has taken a massive downward spiral), and will join in with most activities suited to her capabilities. The staff seem to go out of their way to be inclusive, loving and patient and with all what we hear in the media, this is a wonderful feeling especially as the day draws closer to when she may have to go into full time care.
