"Unacceptable staff attitude"

About: Perth Children's Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

After 8 years of ongoing issue, including complaints to the Minister for Health, to which the head of department’s lies overruled a parent truth on Tuesday this hospital, in my opinion, reached the peak of atrociousness which sums up the entire attitude of ignorance and arrogance on which I believe this place is fueled.

My child when thought to be under anaesthetic heard defamatory remarks about their parents and their illness and even worse comments were made about my child and they were mocked.

I hope the anesthetist and those involved who know nothing about us or our journey feel better about themselves for having done this to a child who has spent the last 4 years fighting for their life.

I said to my child that these people are vile, there are no other words. Always make sure you are better than that and you are never that person. We have lodged so many complaints, incident after incident, and all justified, still waiting for issues to be addressed in 30 day complaint time frame. What a sad position to be in with only 1 hospital in the state and no choice to take your child’s care anywhere else. So in fact, we are left contemplating now whether removing our children from the care of the hospital because the hospital that provides the care is so intolerable.

Dear novemberrk67

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. The situation you have described clearly does not align with the values and expectations we pride ourselves on at PCH and the Child and Adolescent Health Service more broadly. I understand this experience is very distressing for both your child and your family, and I am sincerely sorry that this occurred.

I understand from your comments that you have made a complaint which is in the process of being investigated. I encourage you to contact your Patient Liaison Officer to provide details around this incident, so that this can also be thoroughly scrutinised and further action taken as appropriate. Alternatively, you are welcome to call me directly on (08) 6456 4546.

Notwithstanding this, I note your frustration that previous complaints have not been resolved to your satisfaction, and I am sorry this has been disappointing for you. Please be aware that if you wish to seek an independent review of the issues you have raised, you may do so through the Health and Disability Complaints Office (HaDSCO) on 1800 813 583. HaDSCO is an independent Statutory Authority providing an impartial resolution service for complaints relating to health, disability and mental health services provided in Western Australia.

Thank you again for bringing this matter to our attention. Please accept my sincere best wishes for your child.

Kind regards

Dr Victor Cheng
