"Respecting my privacy"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital

(as the patient),

I recently had eye surgery at the Sydney Eye Hospital. Overall the care I received from all staff (doctors, nurses, etc.) was excellent. The only complaint I have is regarding a cleaner of the opposite sex to me. This staff member entered the bathroom while I was in there - they never knocked or called out before doing so. I had a visitor at the time who witnessed this. I felt this was totally inappropriate. We reported the incident to a nurse who said this wasn't the first complaint regarding the same behaviour about this cleaner. The other issue is the locks don't work properly and I was in a four bed room, so it's a shared bathroom.

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to post your feedback on Patient Opinion, acknowledging the excellent care you received by the doctors and nurses. I am concerned to hear about your experience in the bathroom and I apologise for the behaviour of the cleaning staff member and subsequent response from the nursing staff. I will ensure both the Cleaning Manager and Nursing Unit Manager follow up with the staff. We will also ensure the locks are repaired.

Dear Respecting Privacy

We have shared your experience with representatives from both the nursing and cleaning staff here at SSEH, who agree that patient privacy is important to us all. In order to ensure this message is heard by staff, we have now placed signage (example attached) on all patient and public toilets within the hospital. In addition there has been a review of all the toilet locks to ensure they are repaired and functioning.
