"Disappointing inpatient care"

About: Maroondah Hospital

(as the patient),

Had recent manipulation under gas & temporary cast after emergency department x-ray.

No room in the orthopaedic ward so I was admitted to 3 east.
A doctor from orthopaedics came the following morning and said he would arrange medication before he manipulated & plastered. No meds were given beforehand, the doctor was not impressed and ran out of the room to speak to the nurses.

He began his procedure, then the nurse came with Endone way too late. The pain was unbearable, one of his interns watching was patting me on the shoulder and comforting me. I also overheard the nurses doing a shift change and the way it sounded was that the Endone was given beforehand!

I have heard that it should have been done in a plaster room with a blood pressure monitor and an injection beforehand, not in my room on the food table.

The doctor requested I have a box sling that didn't happen either until much later when I had to ask for it.

I had a third x-ray after this procedure at about 2 pm. When the night nurse came in about 11 pm, she was shocked to find out no one from orthopaedics had been around to speak to me about the result at all that whole afternoon. She immediately took me off the drip and gave me some soup and sandwiches. She settled me down for the night, knowing that no one would be around that night. Unfortunately, the plaster was way too tight and this nurse arranged for someone to come up from orthopaedics at 11.30pm with tools to make some cuts in the plaster as my fingers were swelling.

My husband rang the hospital and complained the next morning. I was offered a shower at last. I asked to be transferred over to the orthopaedics ward but another nurse asked me to wait until at least 9 am. Fortunately, a doctor came at 9.22am for me to be told everything was set okay and three more weeks would be the telling point.

A most disappointing experience I must admit and a private patient to boot.

A lack of communication I'm afraid.

Dear avocetwg84

Thank you so much for taking the time to share feedback regarding your experience with your broken arm at Maroondah Hospital. I would like to sincerely apologise it was not a positive one and the lack of communication and involvement in your care.

There are a number of aspects of your experience I think we need to review, with communication certainly being at the heart of it. In order for us to review the specific details of your care, maintain your privacy and also to know specifically the staff who cared for you, I would welcome you making contact with one of our Patient Relations Advisors in the Eastern Health Centre for Patient Experience via either calling 1800 EASTERN or emailing feedback@easternhealth.org.au.

I certainly hope you make contact, but of course will respect your decision should you choose not to. At the very least, I will be sharing your comments with the leaders of the orthopaedic service.

I trust your arm is healing well and any future care you have with Eastern Health and specifically Maroondah Hospital is more positive.

Many thanks again and kind regards

David
