There were two cooks during my mother's three-week stay. One chef provided excellent food. The other gave food that, in my opinion, was largely inedible, and completely unsatisfactory for hospital patients. My mother went hungry on a number of occasions as the food dished up was unpalatable, often cold, under-prepared and included canned vegetables instead of fresh. We had to resort to organising food to be taken in on the days when this chef was on duty, which is unacceptable.
All of the staff were kind, compassionate and professional towards my elderly mother, with one significant exception. One nurse told my mother that she should not be taking up a hospital bed and should move to an aged care facility. My mother was extremely distressed and in tears about this. My mother had private health insurance. She has admitted with a fractured vertebra and her doctor was definite about her need to stay in the hospital until he was satisfied. She may be able to manage at home as she lives alone. This incident was reported to hospital administration.
Overall, the care provided in Margaret River Hospital was excellent apart from these two issues.
