Our pet labrador scratched my hand in one of its usual two states - over-excitement. It's other usual state, when not eating, is sleeping. I did nothing for several days until it became infected when I went to the local medical centre and got a prescription for antibiotics. The hand got worse so a few days later I went to a different doctor to get a different type of antibiotics. The problem was I was due to have surgery on one of my eyes the following week and was told they would postpone the operation unless the infection disappeared. The second doctor sent me up to Sydney Hospital, the closest, with a letter explaining my problem. Apart from the two-hour wait in emergency, the experience was excellent. It seemed like organised chaos with people walking quickly back and forth all over the place. The doctor put me on a drip for a different antibiotic and a nurse took over from there. I was sent home about 40 minutes later with a pack of oral antibiotics.
