"Discharged late at night"

About: Royal Perth Hospital

(as the patient),

Every time I’m in hospital for whatever reason, I’ve also done dialysis and finished late then been told to go home. The latest I was told I could go home was 9pm at night. Now I live 100km away, so finding or getting transport is impossible. I believe the hospitals need to take into consideration country patients and the distance they need to travel, also not everyone has relatives living in the city.

Dear Dusty466,

Thank you for getting in touch with us and for providing this valuable feedback. I apologise that your treatment finished so late and that you were not provided with support to ensure that you had adequate options for your safe return home. It is the practice of the hospital to provide metropolitan patients with taxi vouchers when finishing late and staff try to ensure that regional patients either have suitable accommodation or finish their treatment as early as possible. Without more information, I am unable to comment on your discharge specifically. However, the Director that oversees this area would like to invite you to contact her office so that she can discuss your experience and we can improve our patient care. We ask that you please contact her office on 9224 2053.

Again I apologise for your experience.

Yours sincerely

Dr Lesley Bennett

Executive Director
