"Urology Clinic"

About: Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital

(as the patient),

Recently I attended a doctor's appointment at the Urology Clinic at Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital.

We were discussing PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels that had risen from 7.1 to 9.6 to 10 in the past 12 months.

He said, The PSA levels had stabilised between 9.6 and 10 in the past few months and that he would not be concerned until the PSA levels had reached 20 or 50.

I said, I might be dead by that time.

He replied, That's what we're hoping for.

Am I to believe that the health system would like to see senior citizens die before offering help?

My prostate cancer has been confirmed.

Some comments from the Brisbane Prostate Clinic.

Active Surveillance:

+   Prostate examination, prostate biopsy, and PSA tests may not accurately determine whether the cancer is indeed insignificant from the outset.

+   The cancer may progress while on surveillance, so it may require more intense treatment and become incurable.

+   The anxiety of living with untreated cancer.
