"Excellent care received as an overseas visitor"

About: Coral Bay Nursing Post Royal Flying Doctor Service Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital St John Ambulance WA Telehealth Service - WACHS Midwest

(as the patient),

I was part of a tour group visiting the Coral Bay Area WA when I suffered difficulties breathing and a possible heart attack.

I was taken to the Coral Bay Nursing Post. There I met Nurse Jan (who was actually on her day off at the time). From first meeting Jan she was thoroughly professional about all she had to do. Only once she had done this did she take the time to get to know me better. During the time I was there she continued to monitor my situation. She was efficient in her explanation to the ‘TV Doctor’ (Telehealth) who eventually decided I needed to be flown to the Charles Gairdner Hospital by the RFDS (Royal Flying Doctor Service). Again their care in transit was exceptional.

I was taken briefly from Jandakot Airport to the Charles Gairdner Hospital by the St John Ambulance. Again the staff were efficient and informative.

When I arrived at the Charles Gairdner Hospital it was the middle of a busy Saturday night. Although I was not the centre of everyone’s attention I was not left uninformed. I was kept well informed of what I was waiting for next.

I was eventually moved to the Coronary Care Unit early the Sunday morning. From that point on my care was exemplary. From the cleaner who cleaned my room, and the staff who served me my food and drinks through to the consultants Paul and Kevin. Including everyone in between. I was amazed at their enthusiasm in their roles. Their genuine concern about their patients and outcomes. Coming from the NHS in the UK I can tell you they don’t always go together!

I have only praise for the care provided to me in my time of need. If my ill health had to happen at all then I am glad it happened when it did.

A massive thank you to all concerned.

Dear muscazt36

Thank you for sharing your wonderful feedback on Patient Opinion especially in light of your recent experience. I know it can be stressful when you are away from home and you become unwell and I was so pleased to read that the care you received on your health care journey was of a high calibre. It certainly takes a team to provide healthcare to our communities and it is fantastic to see their efforts publicly acknowledged. Your feedback reinforces the work the teams do and their commitment to providing high quality patient centred care.

The video link you speak of is the Emergency Telehealth Service (ETS) which is a great service that uses video conferencing equipment to connect local doctors and nurses with highly trained, emergency medicine specialists. The emergency medicine specialist is linked via videoconference, providing guidance to the local treating team. A consultation with an ETS doctor is just like any other ‘in person’ consultation and allows us to provide high quality specialist care close to home.

WA Country Health Service works in partnership with a number of organisations including St John Ambulance and RFDS to provide healthcare to our community. The partnership between health services and health transport providers is an integral component of rural health care. I will ensure your kind words are passed on to the St John Ambulance and RFDS teams involved in your care as I know they will really appreciate it. I am advised that Patient Opinion has passed your compliment on to the team at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Patient Opinion and I hope you are well and truly on the mend and were able to continue your visit to our beautiful state of WA.

Best wishes

Michele

Dear muscazt36,

Thank you for taking the time out of your visit to Australia to tell your story.

I am sorry to hear that your trip to WA’s beautiful north west was interrupted by this health scare but it is wonderful to hear that you had an excellent, coordinated response from all involved and that you benefitted from our Telehealth service. In a vast state like ours, it is essential that patients just like you are able to quickly access specialists who are very remote to their location.

I am glad that upon arrival at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital you were met with an effective, caring team who kept you informed. Our staff are very committed to making sure patients feel well cared for and I will ensure that your story is shared with those teams involved in your care.

I wish you well with your recovery and hope that you will enjoy the remainder of your stay in Australia and have a safe trip home.

Kind regards,

Janet Zagari.
