"Nurse treatment of another patient."

About: Nepean Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a service user),

Recently whilst waiting for a doctor to see my child I witnessed one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen at Nepean. An older nurse was removing something from another patient seated near us in the waiting room. This patient told the nurse that they were highly allergic to latex. The nurse then told the patient that they were being ridiculous and the nurse was allergic to blood, completely dismissing the patient's concerns and belittling them by making a joke out of their allergy, the nurse then proceeded to take out whatever it was with latex gloves on. The patient asked the nurse not to and they still did it. We then sat and watched in horror as the patient's arm flared up bright red and the patient became distressed and incredibly uncomfortable. The patient told another one of the nursing staff trying to get help because of the reaction they were having and the patient said they wanted to make a complaint. This nurse said they were sorry but gave the patient no information on how to make a complaint or give them help when by this stage the patient had red patches all over their back! At this point we spoke to the doctor and told the doctor we would take our child elsewhere if they weren’t going to run any tests. Our child has multiple health issues and we were not going to have them attended to by nurses like that! Ignoring concerns like that could have serious consequences. I felt that the behaviour by this nurse was unacceptable and so wrong! I have lost all faith in Nepean Hospital, this isn’t the first bad experience but if a patient is telling a nurse they are allergic to something and the nurse tells them they are being ridiculous and ignores them, it could end in a death. We weren’t the only ones to go elsewhere after witnessing this either.

This response is on behalf of Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District:

Dear Nothappy30,

We take incidents like this extremely seriously and we have strict processes in place to review incidents and ensure recommendations are followed. Unfortunately, we are unable to identify this occasion and encourage the patient to contact our team at NBMLHD-NepeanFeedback@health.nsw.gov.au so we can investigate further.
