"Colonoscopy preparation not right for me"

(as the patient),

I had a colonoscopy. For me the PicoPrep was hard to tolerate. If I had to have another operation I would change the preparation. I could not stop throwing up, not very pleasant at all. I was admitted to hospital, blood test showed I was low in sodium, I was placed on a drip for 12 hours. Four days later I am still feeling weak. PicoPrep is not for me.

Dear earthhc98

I am sorry that you experienced unpleasantness with the Pico prep with vomiting and that you were admitted to hospital for replacement of IV sodium. Unfortunately, the preparation is necessary for this procedure to ensure a clear view of the bowel. I will investigate if there are any other preparations that would replace Pico Prep. I hope that you have recovered and are feeling well again.

Dear earthhc98,

Yes, unfortunately every medication has side effects, and some of the more common side effects of pico prep are nausea, vomiting and headache.

Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience in your bowel preparation. We have been updating our information that we give to patients to tell them what to do if they have side effects, however we have not yet found an alternative preparation.

I do hope you are beginning to feel better.
